Obersee Königssee: Complete Guide

Obersee is a small mountain lake in Berchtesgaden National Park in Bavaria, southern Germany. It lies south of Königssee, between high mountains and forests.

You cannot drive to Obersee. To reach the lake, you first need to take a boat across Königssee. From the last boat stop at Salet, you continue on foot.

This guide covers how to visit Obersee Germany, the boat trip, the hike, what to see, and how much time you need.

How to Get to Obersee

The easiest way to get to Obersee is through Schönau am Königssee. This is where the boats on Königssee leave from.

Take a boat south across Königssee to Salet. Salet is the last boat stop and the closest one to Obersee. From there, follow the signs to the lake.

The route is simple:

Schönau am Königssee → boat to Salet → walk to Obersee

You cannot drive from Königssee to Obersee. There is also no bus to the lake. You must walk the last part from Salet.

If you come by car, you can park near the Königssee boat pier. You can also reach Schönau am Königssee by public transport from Berchtesgaden.

Königssee to Obersee

The trip from Königssee to Obersee starts with a boat ride. Boats leave from Schönau am Königssee and travel south along the lake.

On the way, they stop at St. Bartholomä. This small church with red domes is one of the best-known sights at Königssee. To reach Obersee, stay on the boat until Salet.

Once you arrive at Salet, follow the path to Obersee. The walk is short, and you do not need to climb a mountain to reach the lake.

There is no regular Obersee boat. Boats only travel on Königssee and take you as far as Salet. You must walk from Salet to Obersee.

Check the boat schedule before your trip. The service changes during the year. Make sure you also check the time of the last boat from Salet. You need to be back at the pier before it leaves.

Obersee Hike

The Obersee hike starts at Salet. You can keep it short or walk farther along the lake.

The first part takes you from Salet to the northern shore of Obersee. If you only want to see the lake, you can stop here and then return to Salet.

For a longer walk, follow the trail along the shore to Fischunkelalm at the southern end of Obersee. The path gives you views across the lake and the mountains around it.

On calm days, you can see the mountains and forest reflected in the water. This is one of the best-known views of Obersee.

The walk is not a hard mountain hike, but good shoes are still useful. The path can be wet after rain.

You can also continue past Fischunkelalm towards Röthbach Waterfall. This adds more time and distance to the hike. Check the time before you continue so you do not miss the last boat from Salet.

What to See at Obersee

Obersee itself is the main sight. It is smaller than Königssee and has no roads or towns along its shore.

The northern shore is a good place to stop for your first view of the lake. From here, you can see across the water towards the mountains at the other end.

The trail along the lake is also worth walking. It leads to Fischunkelalm and gives you several views of Obersee from different angles.

You can combine Obersee with a visit to St. Bartholomä on Königssee. Check the boat schedule first to see if you have enough time for both stops.

If you want to spend more than one day in the area, you can stay in Schönau am Königssee or Berchtesgaden. Schönau is useful if you want to stay close to the boat pier. Berchtesgaden is a good base for trips to other parts of the national park.

Obersee Waterfall

The Obersee waterfall that most visitors come to see is Röthbach Waterfall, or Röthbachfall.

It lies beyond the southern end of Obersee. You can see the waterfall from parts of the Obersee area. To get closer, continue along the lake to Fischunkelalm and follow the trail into the valley.

The walk to the waterfall takes more time than a basic visit to Obersee. Keep this in mind when planning your day.

The amount of water in the falls can change with the season and recent rain. The view may look different depending on when you visit.

If you walk towards Röthbachfall, leave enough time to get back to Salet. The last boat is the key deadline for the day.

How Much Time Do You Need?

Plan most of a day if you want to visit both Königssee and Obersee without rushing.

A simple trip to Salet, followed by a short walk to Obersee and back, takes less time. But you will need longer if you want to walk along the lake to Fischunkelalm.

Add more time if you plan to walk towards Röthbach Waterfall or stop at St. Bartholomä.

Your plan should start with the boat schedule. Check when the boats leave in the morning and when the last boat returns from Salet. Then decide how far you want to hike.

Tips Before You Go

Try to take an early boat, especially in summer. This gives you more time at Obersee and makes it easier to fit a longer hike into the day.

Check the current Königssee boat schedule before you go. Boats to Salet do not run on the same schedule all year.

Wear comfortable walking shoes. The short Salet to Obersee route is easy, but you will need better footwear if you plan to walk farther.

Bring water and clothes for changing weather. Rain and cooler temperatures are common in the mountains, even when the weather is warm at lower levels.

For an overnight stay, Schönau am Königssee puts you close to the boat pier. Berchtesgaden is another useful base if you also want to explore the wider area.

Most of all, leave enough time for the trip. The boat ride across Königssee and the walk around Obersee are part of the day, not just ways to reach your destination.
