Königssee is a mountain lake in Bavaria, in the south of Germany. It lies inside Berchtesgaden National Park, close to the Austrian border and Salzburg.
Steep mountains surround most of the lake, so there are few roads or paths along its shores. The main way to explore Königssee is by boat. From the village of Schönau am Königssee, boats cross the lake to St. Bartholomä and continue towards Salet, which is the starting point for the walk to Obersee.
But the boat trip is only one reason to visit. You can hike to viewpoints above the lake, walk the Malerwinkel trail, visit Obersee, explore Berchtesgaden National Park or use Königssee as a base for a longer stay in this part of Bavaria.

Königssee is located in southeastern Bavaria, near the town of Berchtesgaden. The lake sits within Berchtesgaden National Park, surrounded by the Berchtesgaden Alps.
The closest settlement is Schönau am Königssee. This is where you will find the main parking area, restaurants, hotels and the boat pier.
Salzburg is also close, making Königssee possible to visit as a day trip from Austria.
Most visits start at the northern end of the lake in Schönau am Königssee.
You can take a boat across the lake, hike to nearby viewpoints or spend more time exploring the national park.

The boat trip is one of the easiest ways to see Königssee.
Boats leave from the pier in Schönau am Königssee and travel south across the lake. One of the main stops is St. Bartholomä, known for its small pilgrimage church with red domes.
Some boats continue farther south to Salet. If you want to visit Obersee, this is the stop you need.
The trip itself is part of the experience. From the water, you get a much better sense of the mountains surrounding the lake and how narrow Königssee is in places.
During busy periods, it is worth checking the current boat timetable before planning the rest of your day.
Obersee is a smaller mountain lake just south of Königssee.
You cannot drive there. The usual route involves taking the boat across Königssee to Salet and then continuing on foot.
The walk from Salet is short and leads to the northern shore of Obersee. You can stop here for the classic view across the lake or continue along the trail towards the opposite shore.
If you have enough time, the walk can be extended farther towards the waterfall beyond Obersee.

You do not need to take a boat to get a good view of Königssee.
Malerwinkel is one of the best-known viewpoints near the northern end of the lake. A walking trail leads from the Königssee area through the forest to viewpoints over the water and surrounding mountains.
This makes Malerwinkel a good option if you have limited time or want to combine a short hike with your boat trip.
The route is also much easier to fit into a day than some of the longer mountain hikes in Berchtesgaden National Park.
St. Bartholomä sits on the western shore of Königssee and is accessible by boat.
Its small church is one of the most recognisable sights on the lake. Behind it rise the steep slopes of the surrounding mountains, including the Watzmann massif.
You can get off the boat here, explore the area on foot and later continue your journey or return to Schönau am Königssee.
If you plan to visit both St. Bartholomä and Obersee, check the boat schedule so you know how much time you can spend at each stop.
There are hiking routes for very different levels around Königssee and the wider Berchtesgaden area.
For a simple walk, Malerwinkel is an obvious place to start. The walk from Salet to Obersee is another accessible option.
More demanding routes climb into the mountains above the lake and require much more time, preparation and suitable conditions.
Do not assume that you can simply walk around the shore of Königssee. The terrain around much of the lake is steep, and there is no simple lakeside path that circles the entire lake.
Most visitors first travel to Schönau am Königssee.
By car, you can drive to the main visitor area near the northern end of the lake and leave your car there. From this point, you continue on foot or by boat.
Public transport is also possible. Berchtesgaden is the main transport hub in the area, with local connections towards Königssee.
Königssee can also be reached from Munich or Salzburg, although travel time makes Salzburg the easier starting point for a day trip.
There is a large parking area near the main visitor zone in Schönau am Königssee.
From the parking area, you walk through the village towards the boat pier. You do not need a car once you reach this point.
If you visit during the main summer season, arriving earlier in the day can make the start of the trip easier.
If you want more than a quick day trip, staying near Königssee gives you much more flexibility.
Schönau am Königssee is the most convenient option if your main goal is the lake. You can stay close to the boat pier and start early without driving from another town.
Berchtesgaden is another practical base. It has a wider choice of accommodation, restaurants and transport connections while remaining close to Königssee.
For a longer trip, either location works well for exploring other parts of Berchtesgaden National Park.
Allow at least half a day if you only want to see the lake and take a boat trip.
A full day gives you far more options. You can take the boat to Salet, walk to Obersee and include another stop such as St. Bartholomä.
If you also want to hike around Königssee or explore other parts of Berchtesgaden National Park, consider staying for two or more days.
Trying to fit everything into a few hours means spending much of your visit watching the clock and waiting for transport.
Late spring through early autumn offers the widest range of options for hiking and exploring the lake.
Summer brings long days but also more visitors. Starting early can help if you plan to take the boat and visit Obersee.
Spring and autumn can be quieter, while conditions in the mountains can change faster.
Königssee is also open to visitors in winter, but boat schedules, trails and mountain conditions differ from the warmer months. Always check current conditions before setting out.
Königssee is worth visiting if you enjoy mountain scenery, walking and spending time outdoors.
The lake itself is impressive, but the main reason to allow enough time here is everything around it. Obersee, Malerwinkel, St. Bartholomä and the trails through Berchtesgaden National Park turn a simple lake visit into a full day or longer trip.
For a first visit, a good plan is to arrive in the morning, take the boat towards Salet, walk to Obersee and leave enough time for one additional stop or short hike before returning.
